Schools
On
any given day, 51 million people, or
one in five of the entire United States population, occupies a school building.
There are 110,000 schools in over 15,000 districts, with 2.3 million teachers,
126,000 administrators, and 600,000 support staff. In a study done by the United
States General Accounting Office in 1995 titled "School Facilities:
Condition of America's Schools" it was found that more than 15,000 schools
reported unsatisfactory Indoor Air Quality. This amounts to 19.2% of our nations
schools affecting 8,353,000 children. Specifically in Illinois, 18.6% of schools
unsatisfactory Indoor Air Quality.
By providing proper indoor
air quality we can:
-
Reduce absenteeism for
students and staff
-
Reduce building
deterioration and improve energy efficiency
-
Reduce outside air
requirements
-
Prevent strained
relationships resultant of poor indoor air quality
-
And most important, we can
protect our investment in the future
According
to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, asthma increased 75% from
1980 to 1994. Approximately 17 million Americans are now diagnosed with asthma, disproportionately
affecting children and those of low income. Over
5 million school-aged children have asthma or one in thirteen children.
Christine Luong of the National Education Association reported that at the 1999
National Education Association (NEA) Annual Meeting in Orlando, indoor air quality in schools has emerged as a
critical issue. In response to this concern about indoor air quality, a
"new business" item was adopted as follows:
*The
NEA urges all state and local affiliates to implement the Indoor Air Quality
Tools for Schools Action Kit in their schools starting with the 1999-2000
school year.
