Commercial / Residential

For many, many years we have seen fiberglass panel filters used in commercial and residential applications. Only five years ago, it was rare to see a pleated type filter in a hardware store. Now pleated type filters are gaining much deserved popularity. So why do you want to use a pleated type filter instead of the fiberglass panel filters you have been using for years?

  1. A pleated filter should last at least three times longer than the average fiberglass or polyester filter because the pleated filter has greater surface area with which to catch airborne particles. You will no longer have to change your filter once a month (as recommended by the manufacturers of the fiberglass and polyester filters), but can change them every three or four months instead. While a pleated filter does cost more than a panel filter, you would have to buy four panel filters for each pleated filter which will narrow that cost gap.

  2. A pleated filter will do a much better job of catching and holding airborne particles including pollen, dust, pet hair, and lint. This is because the filter media fibers are much closer together than the fibers in a fiberglass or polyester filter.

  3. A pleated filter will help your air conditioner and furnace run more efficiently for lower energy costs by keeping your equipment cleaner. When you get a dust buildup on the coils which heat and cool your air, it will take more energy to heat and cool those coils. Because a pleated filter removes more particles from the air, it will help keep those coils cleaner and working more efficiently. This will also help prevent costly  repairs and coil cleaning.

Hopefully now we have convinced you about the superior performance of a pleated filter versus a fiberglass or polyester panel filter. So why would you want to buy one of our pleated filters instead of a competitors?

  1. DP Filters represents the Farr Company and their line of air filtration products. Farr Company was the first manufacturer of the pleated type filter and remains the industry leader today. If it is a special size filter you are looking for, dp filters manufactures our own line of filters or we can customize a Farr filter to meet your needs.

  2. Farr offers three varieties of pleated type filters for most any application.

The Farr 20-20 is a 1" deep filter designed for small systems where the reduction of air flow is a concern. The 20-20 has a lower pressure drop than most competitors while maintaining filtering efficiency.

The Farr 30/30 is the industry standard in depths of 1", 2". and 4". The filter media is manufactured by Farr for better control of the quality and consistency of the filters. Our competitors purchase their filter media from other sources and do not have the quality control and testing procedures which Farr goes to great lengths to maintain. Every filter is labeled with codes which will tell us where the filter was manufactured, the date when it was built, and the person responsible for approving that filter for shipment, so if ever there was a problem, Farr could research the history of that filter to help prevent the problem from reoccurring. DP Filters has never had a problem filter where we have had to use those codes.

The Farr Aeropleat is an economical pleated filter in depths of 1", 2", and 4". The Aeropleat is similar to the 30/30 but with less pleats per linear foot. The Aeropleat will not last as long as the 30/30 and is usually only used when filters are changed according to a set schedule, rather than when the filters actually need to be changed.

  3. All of the above Farr filters have a welded wire grid backing to support the filter media, as opposed to an expanded metal backing many of our competitors use. The advantages of the welded wire grid versus the expanded metal are the chances of rust. If the expanded metal backed filters are exposed to moisture or humidity, they will begin to rust. The rust will blow downstream onto your coils or even allow the filter to fail where the filter media blows out. We have even seen brand new filters just out of the box with rusty grid backings, before the filter had ever been used. These filters probably sat in a humid warehouse somewhere for a great length of time before being shipped which allowed the filter to rust. With the welded wire grid backing, you will not have to worry about rust.

  4. In addition to eliminating the problem of rust, the welded wire grid helps maintain a radial pleat design, as opposed to a V pleat design. The radial pleat design will better allow the full surface area of the filter to be used. An expanded metal backed filter can bow in and out blocking some pleats from being used to their fullest capacity. The pleats in these filters can sometimes slide together where they touch, and that blocks surface area from collecting particles in the air and shortens the life of the filter.

  5. Farr is an American company traded on NASDAQ (FARC) and all of their filters sold in the US are made in the US. Farr has several plants strategically located across the US to make sure their filters are made closer to you to help reduce the cost of shipping. The Farr filters we sell are made here in Illinois at their Crystal Lake plant near Chicago. When you buy a Farr filter you can be assured it did not come from China, the Pacific Rim, the middle east, central America, or from a company headquartered in Malaysia.

So how do you find a Farr pleated filter? The local hardware store is not going to have the Farr filters, unfortunately, so your first choice should be to call your Heating and Air Conditioning Service company which installed your furnace or air conditioner. They will know which Farr pleated filter is right for your house or building, and the correct size and installation of your filter. If you live in central Illinois and don't mind making a trip to our warehouse at 2706 S.W. Washington St in Peoria, we would be happy to take care of you as well.

One other thing to mention is if you insist on continuing to use the fiberglass or polyester panel filters, we can sell you those as well, but we just don't recommend them as a quality air filter.
